DNP Program
Welcome to the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (DNP AGPCNP) here at the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine. The DNP program is a 3.5 year evening program from 4:00 to 10:00 pm, consisting of seventy-eight (78) credit hours distributed in seven (7) semesters. Of the twenty-three (23) courses, twelve (12) are offered in a face-to-face format, and eleven (11) are offered in a synchronous distance education format.
Who should apply?
The DNP program is designed for nurses seeking leadership positions in various domains of healthcare. It prepares students to serve as Primary Care Nurse Practitioners for the Adult Gerontology population.
What should I expect?
The DNP program will prepare students to provide direct care as nurse practitioners to adults and gerontological patients in primary care settings.
Admission Requirements and Process
The application process will be reviewed using a holistic approach. The assessment of each candidate will include academic preparedness and formative experiences of the doctoral candidate’s professional background, education, and life. No EXADEP or GRE is required.
Pre-Requisites
- Evidence of a statistics course at the BSN level
Admission Requirements
- Hold a master's degree in nursing from a school accredited by ACEN, CNEA, or CCNE
- Candidates with a master's degree in any other Nurse Practitioner Specialty need to complete the courses of adult primary care Nurse Practitioner and Doctor in Nursing Practice degree.
- An overall GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.
- Current Puerto Rico Generalist License or from another state in the United States
- Demonstrated ability in clinical excellence and leadership.
- Students must be either a U.S. citizen, a legal U.S. resident, or hold a valid visa
- Demonstrate English proficiency.
- Personal letter stating why you want to pursue doctoral study and your intended contribution to nursing.
- Complete an application for admission, including the following:
- Three letters of recommendation from the employment agency or professors on forms provided.
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Two Official Transcripts of a bachelor's degree in nursing.
- Certificate of good conduct and a background check certificate (Police department)
- Admission fee $100
- Interview with the graduate program admissions committee using a holistic interview format
- Complete an Essay of the evaluation of the Nursing Journal Article
Transfer Admission Applicant Criteria
- Has been previously enrolled in a higher education institution recognized as such by the Puerto Rico Board of Postsecondary Institutions, in charge of granting licenses to academic institutions, or by the governmental agency in charge of accrediting institutions of higher learning in the jurisdiction or country where the institution is based, and from a nurse practitioner program professionally accredited (CCNE, ACEN, or CNEA).
- Have taken at least 12 transferable credits with a minimum of 3.25 general point academic average.
- Comply with other admission requirements established by the DNP AGPCNP program.
- The maximum number of credits that can be validated is 50% of the credits of their NP program.
Evaluation and Selection Process
The DNP Student Evaluating and Promoting Committee will evaluate students’ progress. If a student does not meet the satisfactory progress standards, the committee will determine whether the student should be suspended from the program or must repeat the year.
International Students
International students are welcome to apply. They will be provided with information about the different financial alternatives and support systems available to them.
