The Student Programs Coordination Office is in charge of the coordination of the Reasonable Accommodation Program and the medical career planning activities related to the Careers in Medicine® (CiM®) Program, Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®), and the National Resident Matching Program®(NRMP®).

Reasonable Accommodation Program

The Reasonable Accommodation Program promotes and ensures that no student with a documented disability is denied the benefits of, excluded from participation in, or otherwise subjected to discrimination under the educational programs and activities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and applicable state law.

The student must request the reasonable accommodations needed as recommended by the appropriate professional. The Coordinator must verify whether or not a student has a documented disability that significantly impacts his/her ability to access educational programs, and in conjunction with the officers involved, will determine the appropriateness of a requested accommodation on an individualized basis.
All medical records relating to student’s disabilities are kept confidential in a file separated from academic records.

The Student Programs Coordination Office offers workshops on reasonable accommodations for our students and teaching staff.

Medical Career Planning

The main goal of the Careers in Medicine® Program is to help the student learn how to make good career decisions, not only in choosing a specialty, but throughout his/her career as a physician, by means of a thoughtful career planning process. The CiM® Liaison is responsible for coordinating program activities sponsored by the school, such as workshops and events.

What Is Careers in Medicine® ?
Careers in Medicine® is a four-step program designed to assist students in understanding their options for choosing a specialty and applying to a residency program. CiM can be used as a selfmanaged course through the Web site or as part of the career/specialty guidance programs provided by the school. The most effective approach includes a combined effort led by the school’s career planning staff. CiM uses a career development model widely accepted throughout higher education. In this model, career planning and development is a four-stage process:

• Orientation to Careers in Medicine
• Connect with an advisor or mentor Understand Yourself
• Attend CiM workshops at your school
• Begin taking self-assessments on the CiM Web site

M 2
• Complete self-assessments
• Review your assessments results with your advisor Explore Options
• Begin gathering basic information about specialties of interest
• Attend specialty interest groups and panels at your school
• Conduct informational interviews or participate in preceptorships
• Compare your assessment results to the information you’ve gathered about specialties
• Plan your third-year schedule
• Take USMLE® Step 1

• Begin clinical rotations; record your reflections on the Clinical Rotation Evaluation
• Review competitiveness data to assess your qualifications
• Join appropriate specialty associations and organizations Choose a Specialty
• Meet with your advisor to discuss your top specialty preferences
• Complete the Specialty Indecision Scale if you're having difficulty making a specialty decision
• Request letters of recommendation from faculty in your chosen specialty(ies)

Land a Residency
• Research residency training programs through the AMA’s FREIDA Online
• Pinpoint your preferences using the Residency Preference Exercise
• Begin reviewing and comparing residency programs
• ERAS® opens for applicants (July 1)
• Register with ERAS® and begin preparing residency application materials
• Register with the National Resident Matching Program® for the Main Residency Match
• Register for early Match programs, if applicable
• Begin applying to programs and transmitting applications through ERAS (September 15)
• Take USMLE Step 2
• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) released (October 1)
• Interview with residency programs
• Rate programs using the Residency Preference Exercise
• Early Match deadline (early–mid January)
• Rank your selections for the NRMP Main Residency Match (late February)
