Public Health

The SJBSM distinguishes itself by providing a strong education focused on developing students’ skills and competencies in community-based practice. The institution engage students, faculty and staff in activities that promotes the wellbeing of underserved population such as: Women, Elderly, Homeless, and Children. In addition, the SJSBM attend the major Puerto Rico health issues: Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Cancer through primary and secondary prevention.

 

The SJBSM has network with community partners who support students' education learning experience to prepare students for rewarding careers in public health practice or further academic study. As part of the MPH Program requirements, students completes an Integrative Learning Experience and an Applied Practice Experience where students will integrate, apply, and synthesize public health knowledge outside of the typical classroom setting.

 

The MPH program is guided by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) foundational competencies and public health knowledge learning objectives, emphasized the development of community and research activities, and highlighted the Epidemiology and Biostatistics disciplines through the curriculum. The SJBSM has two facilities with computers focused on statistical software and data management solutions, such as Minitab, SPSS, R, and STATA, among others where the academic community could work on the collection, organization, statistical computing, interpretation, and visualization of data. The MPH program has a diverse professional faculty from different fields of study, such as medicine, public health, law, education, administration, psychology, and natural sciences.

 

Students who have graduated from the SJBSM MPH program have continued doctoral studies in areas such as: medicine, epidemiology and environmental sciences in institutions in and out of Puerto Rico. In addition, students graduated from the program have been hired by the private and public sector such as: the Department of Health, Department of Education, pharmaceuticals, non-profit organizations, health prevention programs, among others.

PR License:The Puerto Rico Council of Education (CEPR) to operate the institution in Puerto Rico. The next site visit for the renewal of the license is scheduled for 2021.

 

Institutional Accreditation:The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), the regional accreditor for institution of higher education in Puerto Rico. The next accreditation visit is scheduled for 2019-2020.

 

Programmatic Accreditation:
The SJBSM Master in Public Health Program is working toward meeting the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) criteria.
